Once the betting structure has been determined, the next step is to choose the game format. The most common format is Texas hold ’em, but Omaha and seven-card stud are also popular choices. In Texas hold ’em, each player is dealt two hole cards and then five community cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table. Omaha is similar to Texas hold ’em, but each player is dealt four hole cards and then there are four rounds of betting. Seven-card stud is another option, in which each player is dealt seven cards (three face down and four face up) and there are five rounds of betting.

Once the game format has been chosen, it’s time to start playing! The player to the left of the dealer starts the betting round by choosing to either call, raise, or fold. If they call, they match the current bet; if they raise, they increase the current bet; if they fold, they give up their hand and take no further part in that particular hand. Once all players have had a chance to act, the dealer then deals out more cards (if necessary) and a new betting round begins. This continues until all players have either folded or matched the current bet; at this point, the hand is over and it’s time to reveal your cards.

One important rule to remember is that you can only bet as much as is in the pot. So if there is $100 in the pot and you want to bet $200, you can only bet $100 and the other $100 goes into a side pot that only those players still in can win.

Another important rule is that you must always put in at least as much as the previous bet if you want to stay in the hand. So if someone bets $100 and you only have $50, you must go all-in or fold. You cannot just call $50 because that would be less than the previous bet.

The last rule we’ll talk about here is one that often confuses beginner poker players. It’s called “acting out of turn” and it refers to when a player makes a move before it’s their turn to do so. For example, if it’s Player A’s turn to bet and Player B raises instead, Player B has acted out of turn.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing – it can sometimes be used as a strategy to get information from your opponents – but it’s important to know that it exists so you don’t accidentally do it yourself and end up getting penalized.
